What does it mean to be an owner operator in trucking?

Owner operators are licensed truck drivers who operate as an independent small business. Drivers purchase a truck and then either contract with a trucking company like Halvor for work or run freight through brokerage services like Halvor Logistics.

How do I become an owner operator?

Most owner operators begin their careers working as a company driver for a trucking company like Halvor Lines. Once they have gained some over-the-road experience, they purchase a truck and move to owner operator status.

Because trucks are a significant expense, many drivers take advantage of lease purchase programs like the one offered through Halvor Lines. This allows drivers to benefit from lower prices down payments than they would likely get on their own.

There are two ways to work as an owner operator:

  • Contract with a trucking company and run the company’s dispatched freight
  • Obtain a federal Motor Carrier (MC) number and find work through job boards and brokers like Halvor Logistics

How do owner operators get paid or earn money?

Truck drivers who are owner operators typically get paid one of three ways:

  • A per-mile rate for every mile goods are transported between a shipper and receiver
  • A percentage of the overall costs incurred by the broker or trucking company managing the load; or negotiated rates with a broker like Halvor Logistics (for owner operators with their own Motor Carrier (MC) number

Do owner operators need an Electronic Logging Devices (ELD)?

Yes, if they are interstate, long-haul drivers. Drivers who contract with Halvor Lines are provided ELD equipment at no charge.

Do owner operators pay for fuel?

Yes. Because owner operators are self-employed, they are responsible for covering fuel costs. Owner operators who contract with Halvor Lines have access to Halvor’s national fuel network and associated discounts. They also receive a list of the most economical fuel stops along each route – though the ultimate choice of where to fuel remains with the owner operator.

How do owner operators find loads?

Halvor Lines takes care of all of that when you drive for us. We handle all of the sales, dispatching, and billing, so you can focus on driving.

What does the ideal owner operator candidate look like for Halvor Lines?

Our ideal candidate is at least 21 years of age and has:

  • A CDL- Class A License
  • Current DOT medical card
  • Safety history that meets Halvor guidelines
  • Their own truck or will be leasing one through Halvor Lines*

Does Halvor Lines have a lease-purchase program?

Yes! After driving for Halvor Lines for 6 months, we will work with you to make your dreams come true. Learn more about our owner operator lease-purchase agreement.

How often do owner operator truck drivers get home?

Because they are self-employed, owner operators have a great deal of control over their home time. That said, many drivers who choose to become owner operators do it for the opportunity to earn more money – and that means they choose to be on the road more than they are at home. Newer owner operators also tend to be making lease payments on their truck, so they want to drive enough miles to cover the lease payments, along with other business and living expenses.

Do owner operator truck drivers get to take family members and pets along for the ride?

Owner operators contracting with Halvor Lines are welcome to bring family members and pets on the road with them. We have one of the best pet and passenger programs in the industry. We do require owner operators to notify us when they have pets as guests, and we work to make sure that pets meet our vaccination requirements and passengers are insured.
