Launching Your Trucking Career: From CDL School to OTR Training
Starting a career as a commercial truck driver is divided into two vital halves: mastering the fundamentals at a CDL academy to earn your Class A credentials, and completing a high-quality Over-the-Road (OTR) mentorship program to transition into a confident, solo professional.
Halvor Lines, recognized in the Best Fleets to Drive For Hall of Fame, offers a premier Paid CDL Finishing Program designed specifically to bridge this gap. This guide outlines the exact roadmap from your first day of class to hauling freight independently with our team.
Phase 1: Earning Your Class A CDL
Before hitting the open highway, you must master the technical and safety foundations required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
- Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP): Your first step is passing the written DMV exams covering general knowledge, air brakes, and combination vehicles.
- (Check out our state-by-state CLP guide to see your local requirements and study manuals.)
- Choosing Your Educational Path: You can attend an accredited community college or an independent truck driving school to secure your Class A license.
- The Curriculum: Expect a 3- to 6-week program divided between classroom instruction (covering logistics, DOT regulations, and map reading) and hands-on range and on-road practice (shifting, turning, and backing up).
- The Class A CDL Exam: The climax of your driver education is a three-part skills test: a thorough pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control (backing maneuvers), and an on-road driving evaluation.
Phase 2: Onboarding & Corporate Orientation
Once you have your Class A CDL in hand, your employment with Halvor Lines begins with a comprehensive, paid onboarding experience.
We conduct this process at two main terminal hubs: Superior, WI (our primary headquarters) and Rosemount, MN (Twin Cities area).
- Logistics Provided: Our team takes care of booking your hotel lodging and arranging transportation to and from the facility. We also provide breakfast and lunch during your stay.
- What to Expect: You will undergo a standard DOT drug screening, physical agility testing (especially important if you choose the flatbed division), and a comprehensive review of our safety protocols, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and corporate culture.
Phase 3: The Paid OTR Finishing Program
The core of your transition happens during our four-week over-the-road finishing program. Unlike many mega-carriers that force “team driving” on new hires, where the instructor sleeps while the student navigates blindly into the night, we prioritize true, wake-hour mentorship.
Key Pillars of OTR Mentorship
- Side-by-Side Coaching: Your assigned mentor stays awake and sits in the passenger seat next to you while you are behind the wheel. This ensures you receive real-time feedback, navigation tips, and active safety coaching.
- The “40 Backs” Program: Maneuvering a 53-foot trailer into a tight dock is often the most stressful part of a new driver’s job. We integrate an intensive backing curriculum to ensure you complete at least 40 real-world docks under close supervision before going solo.
- Specialized Cargo Instruction: Depending on the division you select, your instructor will teach you the nuances of that specific freight, such as monitoring refrigeration units (reefers) or practicing proper tarping and strapping techniques for flatbeds.
Trainee Compensation Structure
We reduce the stress of starting a new career by offering a strong financial safety net during these introductory weeks.
| Compensation Component | Details |
| Mileage Pay | Earn $0.20 per mile for all miles under dispatch |
| Weekly Guarantee | A $1,000 minimum weekly guarantee to protect your paycheck if traffic, weather, or delays slow you down |
| Accessorial Pay | Additional pay for extra duties, including long layovers or crossing the Canadian border |
Phase 4: Going Solo and Future Career Paths
Graduating from the finishing program means you are handed the keys to your own late-model, well-maintained tractor. However, you are never truly isolated; Halvor Lines provides an assigned driver manager and keeps you connected to your original mentor via phone, text, and email for your entire first year.
Long-Term Growth Opportunities
- Division Flexibility: You can shape your lifestyle and earning potential by choosing between Dry Van, Deck Van, Refrigerated (Reefer), or Flatbed divisions.
- Become a Certified Trainer: After just six months of solo driving with a clean safety record, you can qualify to become an instructor yourself. This allows you to mentor the next generation of drivers while earning an additional $0.27 per mile on top of your standard base pay.
- The Owner-Operator Route:For those aiming to run their own business, our Lease Purchase Program features quality tractors and equipment to help fleet drivers smoothly transition into independent owner-operators.
Transitioning from a CDL academy to the open highway is a major milestone, but we ensure you don’t navigate it alone. By combining your new Class A credentials with our paid, side-by-side OTR mentorship, you aren’t just starting a job; you’re launching a lifelong career.
