Obtaining your Michigan CLP and CDL

In Michigan, the Secretary of State’s office is responsible for all commercial driver permitting and licensing. Fortunately, they have branches located throughout the state. Use this handy appointment scheduling tool to find the Michigan Secretary of State office branch closest to you.

Documents to bring when applying for your Michigan CLP:

  • Documentation showing proof of your Social Security number
  • Proof of legal presence in the United States
  • A valid Class D Michigan driver’s license
  • Proof that you are medically certified to drive professionally. You’ll find a list of federally approved medical examiners here.

Studying for your learner’s permit:

You need to pass a written knowledge exam to obtain your permit, so make sure to study the Michigan Commercial Driver’s License Manual. The manual also includes information needed to obtain your Michigan commercial driver’s license (CDL), so the more you study, the better prepared you will be for both exams.

Attending an approved CDL training program

Starting in 2022, CDL schools and training programs must be listed on a federal registry of approved CDL training programs. Confirm that the CDL program you choose is a federally-registered Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) program.

If you’d rather earn money to train than pay tuition, connect with a Halvor recruiter via email or by phone at 833.4.HALVOR.

“I’m independent by nature. Driving for Halvor lets me feel like my own boss, but with the perks of steady work and a good income.”
